Nowadays microelectronic components which are liable to be affected by electromagnetic disturbance are used even in appliances which, until only recently, were merely fitted with a simple on/off switch. Nearly every electrically operated appliance is fitted with either logic circuit, microprocessors or a complete set of circuitry. The use of new microelectronic components, in particular of high-speed clocked microprocessors, raises new problems.
The signals produced in the application of new techniques are a system's wanted signals. These may, however, at one and the same time, act as unwanted signals both for the same and for other systems. Increasingly higher frequencies and frequency components are being used by these signals, resulting in a growing risk of capacitance and inductance coupling between parts of the circuitry. The rise in the number of disturbance sources and of functional units subject to disturbance is accompanied by a higher probability of disturbance, also raises the question regarding bio-medical effects.
Seen in this context, therefore regulations for testing the Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC), Telecommunications (especially for Radio Products) and Safety are becoming an explosive technical, economic and environmental problem worthy of serious consideration.
