Electrical Safety
Electrical Safety is one of the basic requirements that the product must meet with the market introduction.
Every product must construct and manufactured so that no danger for humans, animals or real material assets exist. The legal basis for the electrical safety is different safety laws in the world. According to these laws, every development must take under the newest state of science and technology into account.
The Low Voltage Directive (LVD) 2006/95/EC is concerned with all safety relevant issues of a product and apples to all electric or electronic equipment with voltage ratings between 50 and 1000 Volts for alternating current or 75 and 1500 Volts for direct current.
For certifying compliance with the Low Voltage Directive the product will undergo an evaluation of its safety performance. This includes test for provision of electrical shock, clearance and creep age distances, function under extreme heat and humidity conditions or fire resistance, further more construction and mechanical strength and safety but also for a correct marking of the product to ensure a correct use by the consumer.
The GS mark is a voluntary certification mark for all kinds of technical equipment. It guarantees that the product meets German as well as European safety requirement. The letters GS stand for “Gepruefte Sicherheit” which is German for “tested safety”.
What differentiates the GS mark from the CE mark is that the compliance with applicable European safety requirements has been tested by a state-approved body. Further the requirements for a GS mark are higher than for the CE mark.
Annual inspections of the factory of the manufacturer have to be carried through to make sure that the product continuously meets the required standards. This means that with the GS mark not only the safety of the product is stressed but also the production line of the manufacturer is supervised and a high quality of product and production line can be guaranteed.
Through the strict control of the quality of the product as well as of the production line the GS mark has become a strong marketing tool which gets the recognition and trust of retailers and consumers worldwide. Though the GS mark is not required by any national law, more and more retailers insist on the GS marking.
The CB Scheme was created to simplify the process of meeting national requirements of various countries on the international market. It is an international cooperation of the certification bodies of more than 45 countries being member of the IECEE (International Electrotechnical Commission for Electrical Equipment). Tests according to the CB scheme allow access to the markets of all countries participating. CB in itself is not a testing mark but a certification framework established on basis of the standards set by the IEC.
